WheelWorks Pudsey Triumph

WheelWorks has successfully secured 3 year funding from BBC Children in Need for the Multiple Realities Co-ordinator salary! We are excited about rolling out the Multiple Realities programme, which has been running for 9 years.
Multiple Realities is an ongoing arts led cultural development programme which encourages young people aged 7-18 from across Northern Ireland to explore their identity using new digital technologies as well as more traditional art forms.
Initially the programme aimed to work with young people from section 75 communities, which included young people of different sexual orientation, young people with a disability and young people from ethnic minority communities. Multiple Realities has evolved to include projects with rural based young people and young people who experience domestic violence. A particular focus for the Multiple Realities programme over the next few years will include working with disabled and BME groups.
All our thanks to Pudsey !!

Thank You Baring Foundation !

WheelWorks would like to thank The Baring Foundation, which contributed to the Multiple Realties Co-ordinator salary for three years.

Multiple Realities Phase 8 has ended leaving behind an exciting array of successful issued based projects, which were delivered to 80 marginalised young people within their own communities, across Northern Ireland.

Phase 8 of the Multiple Realities programme may have ended, however the impact and legacy of the work lives on through unforgettable stories and experiences for all the young people involved. From an Australian surfer lost in Lambeg to magical Ultra Violet rocker puppet performances in Coalisland and dance offs in Dungannon, Multiple Realities projects have ensured that the programme has reached out to marginalised young people through the most creative, innovative channels.

Goodbye Multiple Realities phase 8, hello phase 9!

Carnagat Anti Bullying Project

Congratulations to the young people from Carnagat Newry on completing an anti bullying Multiple Realities project with WheelWorks! The young people aged 7-12 years from Traveller and local communities worked with WheelWorks in partnership with *Belong, Newry, on a project which explored the issue of bullying. The young people investigated how to spot bullying and came up with ideas about how to stop it through discussion and role-plays. The young people then highlighted their ideas and findings through visual art in creating 3 very different fabulous pieces of art using a range of materials.
The art work will be revealed in January 2012 and will be displayed in Carnagat Community House, Newry.

Support the Fair Deal for the Arts Campaign

The arts are facing a cut of £4.2 million over the period 2011 – 15, rising in real terms to 23% when inflation is factored in – this is a disproportionately high cut compared with other sectors, and will hit artistic activity at every level, including valuable work with vulnerable children and young people across Northern Ireland.

Please join WheelWorks in supporting the Arts Council’s Fair Deal for the Arts campaign – visit the Fair Deal Facebook site (link below) and click the 'Like' button.

You can also email/ write to the NI Executive to influence the outcome of the draft budget 2011 – 15: here’s a pre written letter that you can adapt or send the way it is:

Respect Progress Update - World Community Arts Day 2009

Photo: Sean Michael

WheelWorks Respect project is currently taking place at Poleglass Bytes with young people from the area. As one of their photography workshops falls on World Community Arts Day 2009 we asked them what they thought of it so far:
''I think the session's went sweet. I enjoyed learning about taking pictures and taking the pictures.'' ''I think that the course was good…I would take part in a project like this again.''
The group are working with photographer Ursula Burke using the photography technique of multiple exposures to express how they see themselves and how they feel they are seen by others. The group will be working on graphic design and post production next with multi media artist Ken Armstrong to put their words and images together
