PROGRAMMES WITH 4-12 YEAR OLDS
WheelWorks will be re-focusing a major part of our programmes during 2004 on the creative development of 4-12 year olds. This is being piloted through 2 new visual arts and multi-media projects: ‘When I Grow Up’ and the Multi-Media Schools Programme. Both programmes are available for booking by schools and community groups.
WHEN I GROW UP | AGES 5-8
‘When I Grow Up’ is a fun and engaging film project for 5-8 year olds designed by Artists Stephen Mullan and Alacoque Davey. The project combines live action, art, design, photography and pixilation and aims to encourage Children to creatively express what they want to do when they become adults. This project was recently piloted at Woodvale Community Centre where eight 5-7 year olds brought to life their dreams and ambitions ranging from hairdresser to fire-fighter, soldier and angel! During the May-June period Children from the afterschools project at Divis Community Centre will participate in the second ‘When I Grow Up’ project. Watch out on the website for the final cut of both these projects.
CLASS PICS AND FLICKS
AGES 8-10 | KEY STAGE 2
This 6 week multi-media residency programme for Primary Children combines visual arts with digital photography and stop motion animation. Developed by Artists Sheelagh Colclough and Alacoque Davey the project will explore an extensive range of visual elements including colour, form, tone, texture and pattern with the basic elements of digital photography, image editing and stop motion animation. Each residency programme will result in a short animation and a book, wall hanging or frieze for permanent exhibition in the school and as a resource for teachers.
WOODVALE COMMUNITY CENTRE

BALLYMENA COMMUNITY SAFETY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME
PROJECT SHOWCASE | AGES 13-16
DES ALLEN SUITE | BALLYMENA SHOWGROUNDS
MAY 6 | 7.30 PM
The aim of this project in partnership with the NEELB Youth Service and Durlston Pastoral Care Centre was to engage vulnerable and excluded Young People in a programme of positive activity which enabled them to develop their artistic skills and encourage the exploration of personal development, citizenship and community pride. The project has resulted in 4 high quality unique artworks and sound recordings each reflecting the theme of community safety interpreted by the Young People using a range of arts and media techniques. Young People in Harryville worked on an original music / graphic design project produing a music CD complete with an artwork designed cover. At Dunclug Pastoral Care Centre, Young People worked to produce a thoughtful documentary film accompanied by an original soundtrack reflecting their lives in Dunclug estate. In Ballykeel, Young People were introduced to the art of portrait photography and created portraits of various members of the local community, including family and local policemen and firemen. Unique final artworks were created by printing the images onto fine sheets of paper clay. Young People from the Doury Road area created an original Radio Broadcast CD and artwork cover including quality mini programmes and interviews with members of the local fire brigade and the Police Service of Northern Ireland. WheelWorks would like to thank all the participating Young People, Community Leaders: Ian Black, Lorraine Woods, George Foster and Amelia Brown and the BCSP Artistic team: Musician/ Sound Artist Paul O’Hagan, Film-maker Stephen Mullan, Visual Artist Alacoque Davey and Photographers Andy Berndt and Sonya Whitefield.
